Nancy has been designing and studying science learning environments that utilize emerging technologies to catalyze understanding for about fifteen years.

 

Phil Myers

Title: Associate Professor of Biology, Curator of Mammals, Director of Animal Diversity Web

Role: Oversees growth, development and use of Animal Diversity Web, Co-PI on BioKIDS

Background: Ph.D. in Zoology, The University of California, Berkeley

B.S. in Biology, Swarthmore College

Mammalogist specializing in bats and rodents

 

Michelle Astolfi

Title: Project Manager.

Role: Provide administrative support for the coordination of school participants, curricular and software products and research data including: managing the work of school participants, regular correspondence with nationally and internationally distributed school participants, keeping database and research records on school participants, responding to inquiries from schools. Assisting in the preparation of project budgets, monitor budget expenditures.

Background: High School U.S. History and Sociology Teacher, Livonia, MI. 1995-1998.

Cesar Delgado

Title: GSRA

Role: Provide support for teachers using BioKIDS.

Background: B.S. in Chemical Engineering, UCLA.

Cesar taught middle and high school chemistry, physics and math for eight years in international schools in Mexico City before moving to Ann Arbor to pursue doctoral studies in Science Education.

 

Tanya Dewey

Title: GSRA

Role: Acts as a content expert for mammal work, edits species accounts prior to display on the ADW web site, handles feedback questions from web users, and assists in curriculum development for BioKIDS project.

 

Sara Diamond

Title: Research Assistant

Role: Provides teacher support.

Background: B.S. in Environmental Science.

Primarily focus on ecology of insects and squamates. Recently arrived from the California Academy of Sciences working with army ants, community outreach, and teacher education.

 

Karen Dvornich

Title: National Director and co-founder, The NatureMapping Program

Role: Link NatureMapping/Gap Analysis maps with ADW; integrate NatureMapping curriculum and data collection protocols with BioKIDS.

Background: B.S. in Ethology

B.S. in Zoology

20 years business experience in data processing and telecommunications; contract instructor - Woodland Park Zoo and Docent, licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Washington Gap Analysis Project Assistant, National Gap Analysis Program Outreach consultant.

 

Roger Espinosa

Title: Systems Architect/Technologist

Role: Tech Czar Research and development of ADW site and applications.

Background: M. S. in Educational Technology, University of Michigan

M.S. in Computer Science, University of Michigan

Instructional technologist, focusing on content management and online learning.

 

Mike Giordano

Title:GSRA

Role: Provide technical support for teachers using BioKIDS.

Background: B.S. Secondary EducationóSocial Studies, University of Scanton.

M.Ed Learning and Instructional Technology, Arizona State University.

Before coming to Michigan, Mike was manager of the Instructional Development Center at the University of New Hampshire charged with providing instructional technology support to over 750 faculty. He also worked for Intel Corporation as an instructional designer and has held other educational related positions in non-profit and private corporations.

 

Amelia Wenk Gotwals

Title:Research Associate/Doctoral Candidate

Role: Amelia works on the development of content and inquiry-based assessment items that are aligned with specific curricular units. She helps to implement the BioKIDS and KGS curricula in Detroit schools; and when the curricula are completed she works on analyzing the assessment data.

Background: Currently enrolled as a doctoral student in science education

George Hammond

Title: GSRA

Role: Acts as content expert for mites and insects, writes and edits content for ADW, responds to ADW feedback, provides content guidance to the BioKIDS curriculum team. Advocates more invertebrate content in ADW.

Background: Biology Ph.D. student specializing in mites, insects, host-parasite ecology and evolution. Also wears reptiles and amphibian hat.

 

Pier Sun Ho

Title:GSRA

Role: Curriculum Developer and Professional Development Liaison.

Background: S.B. in Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

M.A.C. in Education, University of Michigan

After receiving her masters, Pier taught 7th and 8th grade Science in Newton and Westwood, MA. She is currently working on her Ph.D in Science Education concurrent with a M.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Her primary focus of study is on teacher learning and the development of expertise in practice.

 

Anne E. Huber

Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Role: Coordinated the development of the current BioKIDS curriculum and supplementary materials. Currently involved in the implementation of the curriculum in fifth and sixth grade classrooms. After data collection, will be doing data analysis and revision of the curriculum.

Background: Ph.D. in Bioengineering, University of Washington, 1996

B.S.E. in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Michigan, 1990

Anne has been involved in teaching people of all ages throughout her career. This includes teaching fourth grade science for a semester, tutoring high school students for four years, and training students from high school level to college professors on sophisticated scientific equipment for two years.

 

Tricia Jones

Title: Instructional Designer, Animal Diversity Web

Role: Oversees interface and instructional design of ADW. Participates in development and evaluation of BioKIDS curriculum materials and activities. Acts as liaison between zoologists and School of Education team. Helps with tech stuff.

Background: Ph.D. in Educational Technology, University of Michigan, 2000

Instructional design and evaluation, specializing in higher education.

 

Ben Kelcey

Title:GSRA

Role: Curriculum and technology consultant and developer.

Background: B.S. in Math, University at Albany

Instructional Technology Ph.D. student

Curriculum and technology developer-US Peace Corps in Venda, South Africa.

High school math teacher.

 

Silvia Wen-Yu Lee

Title:GSRA

Role: Support BioKIDS curriculum and technology implementation in Detroit Public Schools.

Background: PhD candidate specializing in learning technologies for biology and medical education

Tom Vlajkov

Title:GSRA

Role: Classroom support, curriculum development/revision, data collection and coding, as well as dealing with minor technological glitches.

Background: B.S. in Earth Science, Western Michigan University

in pursuit of MA in Science Education

Taught both 9th grade and 6th grade science and worked for several years in a science museum.
