Local animals in this group:

loons

Gaviiformes

There are 5 species of loons found throughout the northern hemisphere. These are all large birds that are specialized for catching fish in underwater chases. They are excellent swimmers and can remain underwater for up to 15 minutes, although they usually dive for about 1 minute. Loons are also called divers in Europe. Loons are well known for their haunting and lovely calls, including wails, yodels, tremolos, and hoots.
