Kids' Inquiry of Diverse Species

typical owls

Strigidae

There are 178 typical owl species from all over the world. These owls have streaky brown plumage and round face disks. This is in contrast to the other owl family, barn owls, whose plumage has more solid colors and whose faces are heart-shaped. Some typical owls have feathers called ear tufts on top of their heads. These are not true ears; the real ears are hidden further down the sides of the head as they are in other birds.
