Kids' Inquiry of Diverse Species

loons

Gaviidae

All 5 loon species are members of the same genus, family, and order. Loons are only found on or near water and are usually found in cold, northern lakes or along ocean coastlines. They are fast and agile swimmers, and can fly well, but their legs will not support them on land. They build nests within inches of the water and will carry their nestlings on their backs after they have hatched.
