woodpeckers

Picidae

This family of birds includes 215 species of woodpeckers . They are found on all continents except Australia and the island of Madagascar. They have stiff tails and bills like chisels, adaptations for climbing tree trunks and pounding on them to get insects and grubs under bark. They also use these bills to excavate holes for nesting.
